The Gift of Music

I have a good friend, The Barefoot Poet. Poet is a wonderful writer with a very sweet wife and an adorable baby boy. Poet is also a very gifted musician.

Hubby and I had Poet and his family over for dinner a couple of weeks ago. However, he failed to mention beforehand that he wasn't a fan of Kelly Clarkson.

He doesn't think she has anything to say.

He likened her to Britney Spears.

Okay, Poet. It's ON.

So, just for my friend, Poet, I am posting this musical treat by the always entertaining, Ms. Hilary Duff. It's an infectious melody with haunting lyrics. The bridge is especially thought provoking. How does she do it?!

But the best thing about this song, is how it stays stuck in your head once you hear it, playing on a continuous loop all day and into the night. So, Poet, that is my gift to you. Enjoy.

i gotta agree with novak, this is definitely one of the most annoying songs I have heard in a long time. The chorus could use some more lyrical work :)

What happened to her? She USED to be so cute and now she's all angular-looking and too skinny. She looks like she did time in rehab. My son used to love her but now (thankfully) he has moved on!

Lizzie McGuire has grown up...somehow I feel that Lizzie had much more to say that Hillary. But if you think about the audience that she is marketing (my daughter), the song makes sense. It's easy to sing to and remember the words. That way, a 7 year old who thinks she is 15 can be humming that annoying song when we go to the store and see Hiallry Duff merch everywhere and then proceed to beg, pled and annoy parents into buying it. Plus, mommy feels she has to say yes because it very well could be a musician with bad words talking about shooting cops or something.

In a way, the little twin is brillant.

I like fun catchy songs that anyone can sing, but please don't do that to us again.

POET, please acknowlenge the greatness of Kelly and end this war!

The good news is--I couldn't watch it on your blog for some reason and had to go to VideoZone to view it for myself. The bad news is--that poor girl needs some major help. Not only does it have a serious lyric problem, I don't think the song has more than five notes in it.

My 12 year old came running in the room when he heard it and said-- "Oh-NOOOO Mom, anything but Hillary Duff." I had to laugh, since he didn't know you were dissing her.

She does know how to change clothes though--five times just in that one video

I don't like teeny-bopper music. Am I going to have to turn it off everytime I come to your blog? Key to my heart, key to my heart, key to my heart, key to my heart, key to my heart....

I, personally, liked the KC song sung by your daughter on a blog, but that's about it.

I'm glad I had boys! They like classic rock, like me!

Tsk, tsk, tsk. So, I outlasted the noise that pop culture refers to as music. Okay, so lets look at our "serious" artists writing.

"Here's the thing we started off friends It was cool but it was all pretend Yeah yeah
Since you've been gone

You dedicated you took the time
Wasn't long till I called you mine
Yeah
Since you've been gone

And all you'd ever hear me say
Is how I pictured me with you
That's all you'd ever hear me say

But since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
What I want
Since you've been gone"

Mm, (fighting back tears), I'm so moved, I feel changed somehow deep inside. Now, lets juxtapose this against a song played on hubby's website, "Fortress Around Your Heart" by Sting:

"Under the ruins of a walled city
Crumbling towers and beams of yellow light
No flags of truce, no cries of pity
The siege guns had been pounding all through the night
It took a day to build the city
We walked through its streets in the afternoon
As I returned across the field's I'd known
I recognized the walls that I once made
I had to stop in my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I'd laid

And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire"

I know, peas in a pod those two, Sting and Kelly. Perhaps they'll co write a couple of songs.

This has earned a post on my blog as well, it will be up by tomorrow night, ya'll come by now, ya hear?

Your poet friend is right you know! Any guy that can sing about Nabakov is too cool.

Strong words in the staffroom
The accusations fly
It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabakov
