One Hail of a Night!

This is what fell from the sky last night:

And this is what it did to a window in my minivan:
(No the window isn't rolled down. It is gone...as in, shattered.)

And this is what it did to the sideview mirror:

Soccer practice was cancelled last night, so I invited a friend over with her two children for dinner. Long story short, we ate dessert in the bathtub with sirens going off in the background. That would be two grown women and five children huddled in the tub. Sorry, I don't have a picture of that one. I was too busy freaking out to grab the camera.

"Supermom's Guide to Hosting An Evening Your Friends Will Never Forget"

  1. Plan a simple, yet elegant menu.
  2. Pick a night during tornado season when inclimate weather is almost certain.
  3. Set the table with fine linens and china. You want your guests to feel special. And if a tornado tosses your house around like Dorothy's in the Wizard of Oz, at least you will have used them one last time.
  4. Candlelight always sets the mood...especially if the power goes out.
  5. Be creative. Anyone can have dessert at the table. Pick a safe place away from windows in the middle of your house. The bathtub is always a crowd pleaser.

I'm so proud you had a tub you would show to a friend. I think I would risk all of our lives instead of have to crawl over the tub toys, the gooey soap bars, and the soggy washcloths!

HA ha HA ha HA. I was laughing SO hard when I read this. Hilarious! It was fun, don't you think? I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The dinner was elegant but we'll have to break out the candlelight next time. Oh, this is so funny, I can't get over it!

Hi Supermom. Welcome to the CHBM ring BTW. Love your blog. I live in tornado alley too and have entertained in the bathtub as well. Do you think bubbles for ambiance is too much?

Are you KIDDING me? That sucker is HUGE! Sorry about the van. I agree with Sarah, my tub is not fit for guests. I think I would rather we all get sucked into oblivion than subject my friends to my un-scrubbed shower.

And you didn't invite us!!!! About 15 minutes after the sirens rang out in Sand Springs, they rang in Owasso. As they did, the wife and I looked at each other... is that what we think it is? I don't rememeber ever hearing them before (we've lived here since 2000). We had to eat dessert in a closet. Well, we actually just pet the claustrophic, hyper-scared cat, and didn't eat anything.

Need help with the van? We've got some duck tape!

Next time the sirens go off just do what I do, I get in my car and hall a** down the highway out of the path of the storm. Now that would be a dinner party!

you make every event so very exciting and memorable. can't say it was as exciting at the J household - my husband doesn't believe in hiding from storms, so unless the windows are already being blown out, we aren't in the bathtub. i think dinner was just about ready and my husband was in the middle of fixing our vacuum when the sirens went off for the umpteenth time and the weather actually started to turn bad in our neck of the woods. daughter seemed a little concerned and the neighbors downstairs were outside, trying to stay on the ground. :-) speaking of which - my husband thought our neighbors downstairs must have come from a different place because they were absolutely fascinated by the storms. we also saw them packing up and moving out this morning. go figure.

i'm REALLY sorry about your van. that's cruddy.

I spent many a night as a child in my mom and dad's closet with the AM radio and snacks! Tornados were some fun times.

You win the hospitality award for the week. :)

that piece of hail was huge!!!! so so so sorry about the window, will your insurance cover it? (There was a time my window had been smashed by someone and the ins. wouldn't cover unless they had broken the door in an attempt to take the car...)
anyhoo-welcome to the CHBM. Hope you enjoy your reading! I'll be back...

When I was young my mom would put us in the bathroom and then she would go sit on the back porch and watch. I am much like that today. There is such power in those clouds... it is fascinating. My fave storm memory is when I took the Bible into the bathroom with me and read it to my brother... I guess I was scared and knew who to look to for comfort.

Sorry about the van...my hubbie is a body mechanic but I don't think you want to drive 8 hrs for him to work his magic!
